We wanted to share an update with you following some recent information we have received regarding secondary schools offering additional testing in the New Year (4th - 11th January). Given the timing of the news from the Department for Education, we’re unaware of how many schools will be taking up this offer during the week however, we felt it was important that you were made aware of the implications for this period. Last Thursday (17th December), the Department for Education published information regarding the offer of additional testing for secondary schools in England. This would be accompanied with a staggered/staged return to education for secondary aged pupils, in a bid to minimise the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19) and disruption in education settings. The guidance published indicates that children based at secondary schools where testing is being carried out, and are not attending school in the first week of January, should not attend ‘out of school settings’. After seeking confirmation from Sport England, we have been informed that gymnastics clubs would be classed as an ‘out of school setting’. Therefore, pupils who are undergoing remote education during the first week of term in January, and are based at a school offering testing, should not attend their gymnastics session. The reason for this is to ensure that the testing efforts being run in schools are effective, and to reduce the possibility of the virus being brought into schools when all students return. Clubs in operation during this week can continue to offer face-to-face delivery to children who are: - In primary schools - In early years setting - Home educated - In the secondary school-age cohorts eligible for full-time on-site provision - vulnerable children, children of critical workers and those in Years 11 and 13. Schools that are running testing have been advised to communicate the appropriate guidance to all pupils and parents regarding out-of-school settings. We would like to encourage clubs to be proactive in making parents aware that their facility should only be accessed during this week if their child is in one of the eligible groups as stated above. We will communicate any further information that we receive on this when possible. We know that this has been a very difficult year for the community but we hope we can see a level or normality return in the New Year. We wish you and your members a safe and enjoyable Christmas.
